How it works
How the values test works
The test runs on metaFox.online, in English or German. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and your progress is saved if you pause.

Pick what is important to you
Go through 80 value cards, each with a short definition, and keep the ones that speak to you. You need at least seven; seven to ten is a good place to land. If a value is missing, add your own.

Make them yours
Merge cards that mean the same to you and give each group a name in your own words. You can rename any value and note what it means to you. Stuck on a name? Ask for a suggestion. You end up with three to nine values, ideally seven.

Rank them in pairs
Which is more important to you? You answer that for two values at a time, until every value has met every other value once. The arrow keys work, too. Go with your first instinct.

Check the list and see your report
Check whether the list feels right and change the order if it does not. If you like, pick what you dislike most from 25 cards. Then rate how much room each value gets in your life right now, and your report is ready.

The method
Your values, in your own words
Two cards can mean the same thing to you. In the test you merge them, give them one name that says what you mean, and add a line on what it means to you. This is the example the test itself shows:
Values and goals
You can reach a goal and tick it off. A value you keep living, and you are never done with it. Values also apply everywhere: if fairness matters to you, it matters at work as much as in sport.
| Goal | Value |
|---|---|
| Run a marathon | Look after my body |
| Get the promotion | Do work I can stand behind |
| Be home on time tonight | Be there for my family |

FAQ
Questions about the core values test
What is a core values test?
A core values test helps you find the values that matter most to you. In this one you pick from 80 value cards, put your choices in your own words and rank them in pairs. You end up with three to nine personal values in order, and a report.
Is the values test free?
Yes. Taking the test and getting your report costs nothing. You do not need an account to start. At the end you enter your email, and we send you the link to your full report.
How long does the test take?
About 20 to 30 minutes. You can pause anytime, and your progress is saved.
How many values should I pick?
At least seven. Seven to ten is a good place to land, and you can add values of your own. In the next step you merge the ones that mean the same to you and narrow the list down to three to nine values. Seven is the target.
Why do I rank the values in pairs?
Two values are easier to weigh against each other than ten at once. For each pair you answer one question: which is more important to you? Every value meets every other value once, and the order follows from your answers. You can still adjust the list afterwards.
What is the difference between values and goals?
You can reach a goal and tick it off. A value you keep living. Running a marathon is a goal. Looking after your body is a value, and you are never done with it.
What are anti-values?
Anti-values are the things you want to keep out of your life, such as dishonesty or arrogance. The test has an optional step where you pick the ones you dislike most from 25 cards. What repels you can say as much about you as what attracts you.
What is the test based on?
On Shalom Schwartz's theory of basic human values and on ideas from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Several steps are inspired by Tim Brownson's book The Clarity Method. metaFox is not affiliated with him or the book.
Is this a psychological test?
It is a structured reflection exercise. The values and their families come from Schwartz's research, but the test does not compare you with other people or give you a score. Your list comes from your own choices.
Which languages is the test available in?
English and German.
Is this a test for company values?
No, it is about your personal values: what matters to you in your own life. Teams can still use it in a workshop. Each participant takes the test through a group link and gets their own results.
Can I use the test with my coaching clients?
Yes. On metaFox.online you can invite clients with their own link, run the test in a workshop with a group link and QR code, and debrief the results on a whiteboard. Coaches can try metaFox.online free for 14 days, no credit card needed.
